JEWELLERY CARE

How to Keep Your Fine Jewellery Beautiful

Fine jewellery is designed to be worn, loved, and lived in. With the right care, your pieces can last for generations - becoming part of your story over time.

At Flora Bhattachary, each piece is crafted with care in our Hatton Garden studio. Taking a little time to look after your jewellery will ensure it continues to look as beautiful as the day you received it.

Everyday Jewellery Care Tips

To protect your jewellery and preserve its finish:

Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, and harsh chemicals such as chlorine and cleaning products

Remove jewellery before swimming, exercising, lifting weights, or doing housework

Take off pieces during your beauty routine to prevent residue build-up

Store jewellery in a cool, dry place when not worn

Keep pieces separate to avoid scratching or tangling

These small habits make a significant difference in maintaining the longevity of your jewellery.

Jewellery CareHow to Clean Fine Jewellery at Home

Regular cleaning helps restore brilliance and remove everyday build-up. Engagement rings and wedding bands, worn daily, naturally accumulate dirt over time - especially behind the setting.

Follow these simple steps:

Soak your jewellery in warm (not boiling) soapy water for around 20 minutes

Gently clean with a soft baby toothbrush, especially behind stones and settings

Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft cloth

Buff with a polishing cloth for a lasting shine

Tip: Always cover the drain or use a bowl when cleaning.

Professional Jewellery Cleaning & Re-Polishing

If your piece needs a deeper clean, we offer a professional cleaning and re-polishing service to restore its original brilliance. Professional cleaning helps to bring back a like-new finish.

This is ideal for engagement rings and frequently worn pieces as we can carry out a 'health check' on your piece at the same time.

We recommended professional cleaning ahead of special occasions (allow at least one month)

Caring for Different Types of Jewellery

Different materials require slightly different care:

Brushed Finishes

Brushed textures will naturally soften and develop a smoother sheen over time. We’re happy to restore the original finish in our workshop.

Vermeil Jewellery

Take extra care to avoid rubbing or scuffing, as this can wear away the plated surface.

Pearls

Clean gently with a soft cloth or specialist pearl cleaning set

Avoid immersing strung pearls in water

Check strands regularly for signs of wear

Jewellery Care Rings
Jewellery Maintenance & Checks

Fine jewellery should be serviced periodically to ensure it remains secure and wearable.

We recommend:

A regular professional check

Inspection of stone settings and clasps

Cleaning and polishing to maintain appearance

A sizing check to ensure that your ring hasn't become too tight

Regular maintenance helps prevent potential damage and keeps your jewellery looking its best.

Diamond & Gemstone Care

While diamonds are incredibly hard, all jewellery requires careful handling.

Avoid knocking your jewellery against hard surfaces

Remove rings during activities that may cause impact

Be mindful that claws and settings can wear over time

If you notice:

A loose stone

Snagging on fabrics

Movement within a setting

Stop wearing the piece and arrange a professional inspection as soon as possible.

Caring for Carved Gemstones

Our carved semi-precious stones are shaped by specialist lapidary artisans and require extra care.

Avoid impact with hard surfaces

Store carefully to prevent chips or cracks

Handle gently to preserve intricate detailing

Insurance & Long-Term Protection

Fine jewellery often holds both financial and sentimental value. We strongly recommend insuring your pieces to protect against loss, damage, or theft.

While we’re always happy to advise on wear and care, responsibility for your jewellery passes to you after purchase. You can read more about the terms of our warranty here.
