We want you to know how to care for your jewellery. To ensure you are able to continue to wear your jewellery for a lifetime, it's worth taking a little time to make sure that you look after it.
Perfumes, lotions, harsh chemicals such as chlorine or cleaning products should be avoided. Please remove jewellery before your beauty regime, swimming, going to the gym, lifting weights, doing housework and any kind of strenuous physical activity. Protect your jewellery by storing it in a cool, dry place when not worn, where it will not rub or scratch against other pieces.
Cleaning
The best way to clean most of our pieces is by soaking in hot soapy water for around 20 mins, rinse and patting dry. A soft baby toothbrush can be used to reach less accessible areas - particularly behind the stone and settings. Ensure that you cover the drain or use a bowl. Once the piece has been cleaned, buff with a polishing cloth to ensure a sparkling finished.
Engagement and Wedding Rings that are worn all the time are particularly prone to a build up of grime over time. Where this is particularly difficult to remove, it is best to bring your diamond engagement ring to us and we will help you to clean the ring professionally and safely.
We offer a cleaning and re-polishing service for any pieces that we have created. This is a great option where you would like to have your engagement ring looking new again. Please allow 1 month before any occasion to book this service.
Be aware that brushed finishes are not permanent, and will naturally burnish over time. We are happy to re-finish them in our workshop. Be extra careful with vermeil jewellery not to scuff or rub, as this can remove the plated surface. Pearls should be cleaned using duster or a pearl cleaning set available from specialist stores. Strung pearls should not be immersed in water and should be checked regularly to guard against wear.
Maintenance
We recommend regular servicing of your fine jewellery, to ensure it is maintained. We are happy to check and clean our designs to make sure your piece is secure and looking its best. We recommend having your piece checked annually, so that we can advise on any maintenance needed.
Stones
Diamonds are hard stones and do not scratch easily – but all jewellery is delicate and it is possible to chip or dislodge stones from a setting. Care must be taken not to knock your stones or mount against any other hard material as this is liable to dislodge stones, and dent or bend your piece. If you see any signs of movement of a stone or snagging on a ring - please get in touch and we can arrange a check up. We do not advise wearing your ring again until we have examined the piece, as this could result in further damage.
We are happy to advise on normal wear and tear damage to our designs, however please note that Flora Bhattachary is not responsible for any damage to or loss of stones from your jewellery after purchase. As these pieces are high and often sentimental value, we strongly advise all of our customers to take out insurance so that costs are covered in the event of loss or damage.
Our carved semi precious stones are cut by specialist lapidary experts and therefore require particular care. Take care not to knock pieces on hard surfaces, as stone can crack or chip if it receives a severe blow.
Proper jewellery care ensures you will enjoy your jewels for years to come, so take a little extra time to look after them and keep them looking beautiful. You can also find out about sizing our fine jewellery here.
