Brown diamonds: warmth, character and everyday wear
Brown diamonds have a quiet, understated kind of brilliance. Their colour forms deep underground, through tiny distortions in the diamond's crystal structure as it's shaped by pressure over time, rather than from any mineral or trace element. Brown diamonds are found across diamond-producing regions from South Africa to Brazil and Australia. Shifting from pale biscuit to deep cognac brown diamonds, their warmth and character make them easy companions for daily wear, sitting comfortably in both yellow and white gold.
A spectrum, not a single stone
From champagne, honey to deep cognac, their spectrum of subtle colour is hugely varied. Champagne is pale to mid-toned, often with a golden undertone, as in our Khadra Oval Champagne Ring. Honey leans a little richer. Cognac goes deeper still, the register you'll see in pieces like the Sona Oval Diamond Ring. Within each stone, brightness and clarity vary, so the most useful way to choose is to view a few side by side and see which one feels right.
Naturally coloured diamonds are rare across the board, and brown sits among the more abundant of the fancy colours, more readily found than pink, blue or yellow.
A colour with its own history
Brown diamonds were once considered the least desirable stone in the trade but that changed in the 1980s, when Australia's Argyle mine began cutting its brown rough into fine round brilliants, a shift that opened the way for the warm, characterful diamonds we work with today and the popularity of naturally coloured and 'perfectly imperfect' diamonds.
Worn together
Brown diamonds sit well within a stack. A white diamond wishbone, curved or deep V band can follow the line of an oval or pear stone and offset the main brown stone perfectly. When you're planning ahead, it helps to think about the stack early: a slightly raised bezel edge or a slimmer shank can mean a wedding band nests flush later. We can create bespoke wedding and engagement ring bands in the studio, to ensure that the two sit together without gaps or spinning.

Made with care
Every piece is handcrafted in our Hatton Garden studio, using certified recycled gold and platinum, with diamonds carefully sourced from around the world. A brown diamond is an easy to wear choice. A gentle clean at home and an occasional check of the setting in the studio is all it asks, so it can be worn daily, not saved for best.
